# Connect your office server

> What you need before setting up the sync kit.

The sync kit runs on **one computer in your office** that can open your project folders. This can be a Mac or a Windows PC, and the folders can be on a server, a NAS or the computer itself.

## Before you start

<Steps>
  <Step title="Pick the office computer">
    Choose a computer that's usually on during the day and can open your project folders. Sync only runs while it's on and someone is logged in.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Make a read-only account on your server (recommended)">
    On your server or NAS, create a user that can **read** the Projects folder but not change it. Sign in to the share with this account on the office computer. The sync program never writes to your files, and a read-only account makes sure of it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Get the kit and a key from Studio">
    In Studio's **Office server** panel, download the **Mac kit** or **Windows kit**. Then click **Create key** and keep the key ready to paste.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Tell Linkatect where each project lives">
    Under **Set each project's folder**, enter each project's folder name as it appears on your server.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Then follow the guide for your computer:

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Mac" icon="apple" href="/office-server/mac">Set up the Mac kit.</Card>
  <Card title="Windows" icon="windows" href="/office-server/windows">Set up the Windows kit.</Card>
</CardGroup>
